The UK team line-up for the 2016 IMMAF European Open Championships has been confirmed.
The championships will take place in Prague, Czech Republic from November 22-26.
Akonne Wanliss, 24, is the UK National MMA Champion and he is expected to achieve good results at the upcoming IMMAF European Open Championships of Amateur MMA this month.
The Birmingham UTC competitor, who was born in Jamaica and raised in Wolverhampton, has a kickboxing background along with experience in professional break dancing, before he turned to MMA at 21.
Wanliss became champion at the BAMMA-UKMMAF National Amateur MMA Championships at the Body Power Expo in Birmingham in May.
He won a gold medal in the Welterweight category after a four round robin tournament thanks to three stoppages, two of which came in the first round and one in the second.
Wanliss then went on to make the semi-finals of this year’s IMMAF World Championships at UFC International Fight Week in Las Vegas in July. He was defeated by Irish bronze medallist Cian Cowley.
Joe Millward is the BAMMA-UKMMAF National Amateur Middleweight champion thanks to his performance on a three round robin tournament that saw him achieve a round one RNC win at 1:28.
In his second contest, he earned a default win. He has also won Amateur MMA Middleweight championships for Rise and Conquer and Made4theCage.
Millward will make his IMMAF debut at the 2016 European Open as a Light Heavyweight.
George McManus and Tom Crosby are perhaps Team UK’s most prestigious athletes who are expected to cause some serious upsets in the Men’s Middleweight division.
Other title winners on the team are PK Zadeh (BCMMA Amateur Featherweight champion) and Kierandip (Kiru) Singh Sahota (Fightstar, Machine MMA and TMC Bantamweight British MMA champion.) All four are IMMAF first-timers.
IMMAF’s national team vs national team event takes place from November 22-26 at Prague’s Arena of Sparta and is set to feature 180 competitors from 30 countries worldwide.
